What is SHR IPL?
SHR IPL stands for Super Hair Removal Intense Pulsed Light. It is a newer method of IPL which is fast, effective and almost pain free. Traditional IPL uses a press and flash method whilst SHR IPL is a constant in motion flash as the light is run across the skin. The pulses or shots use less energy to do the same job as traditional IPL so heat the skin and follicle less which is a much more comfortable experience.
How does IPL work?
The SHR IPL handpiece applies broad-spectrum light to the surface of the skin, targeting melanin. This light travels through the skin until it strikes the hair shafts or the bulb also known as the hairs root. The bulb is usually where the highest concentration of melanin is located. As the light is absorbed, the bulb and most of the hair shaft are heated, destroying the hair-producing papilla. This action means the papilla can no longer grow hair.
What types of hair can be treated?
SHR IPL can be used on most hair types and most skin types effectively. The parameters of the machine can be adjusted for different skin tones and the areas of the body. We can remove hair from the face and the body, virtually everywhere.
How many sessions will I need?
At any one time not all hair follicles are active. Some will be growing at various stages and some will be dormant with no actual hair in the follicle. Only active hair follicles can be affected by the light in an SHR IPL hair removal session. Inactive hair follicles need to be treated as they become active, ie grow a hair, over time. For SHR IPL treatments, an average of six to twelve treatments is required to remove most visible hair. A reduction will be noticeable from the first treatment and progressively.
How often will I need SHR IPL Hair Removal treatment sessions?
SHR IPL Treatment sessions are usually spaced four to six weeks apart. Towards the end of the reuired amount of treatments this may be increased to six to eight weeks if the hair growth slows to ensure maximum effectiveness.
How do I prepare for SHR IPL?
We need as many follicles to be active as possible. This means for the best results you should leave four weeks between hair removal that removes the hair bulb (such as waxing, tweezing or epilation) and your SHR IPL sessions. You will need to shave body areas the day before the IPL SHR session as this focusses the light just on the area we want it to go to under the skin and doesn’t burn the hair above the skin. This is not required on the face. You will need to be sun smart in the four weeks before your session and free of sunburn. We also need you to not have used spray tan of fake tan creams as we need to assess your true skin colour to set the machines parameters.
Will my hair grow back?
Actively growing hair that's been treated with SHR IPL should not grow back. Once a hair follicle is damaged, it cannot grow hair. However, hair follicles that were not in the active growth phase will need to be treated. It’s also not unusual for some patients to have a touch-up around two years after initial treatment due to hormonal changes.
Can I use other hair removal methods while having SHR IPL?
Waxing, tweezing and depilatory creams will stimulate the hair follicle which is the opposite of what we want to do with SHR IPL. Shaving will also stimulate the hair follicle so is best avoided as much as possible except on the day before your session for body hair.
Is SHR IPL good for treating Ingrown Hair?
Yes it can effectively treat ingrown hairs by destroying the hair follicle under the skin.
What will my skin be like after the SHR IPL session?
Your skin should seem quite normal but it can be a little warm. We recommend the same caution as after waxing i.e. no hot showers, scrubs, swimming, etc. and take care with applying products to the skin for the first 24hrs.
